Something special stirs in the air as summer fades and crisp air rolls in. The Harvest Moon (the full moon closest to the fall equinox), marks a time of unmatched abundance, reflection, and celebration. And here at the Horton Farmers' Market - we're embracing every moment of the season. Traditionally, the Harvest Moon was a beacon for farmers - lighting the fields late into the evening as the last of the crops were gathered. In many Indigenous cultures across Turtle Island, the Harvest Moon is a time of gratitude and ceremony, a celebration of the relationships between people, land, and food. Today, we at Horton honour this time by mindfully savouring the season, supporting local growers, and celebrating the richness of our region. Baskets are overflowing with leafy greens, fruits, squash, sweet corn, heirloom tomatoes, and root vegetables. Jars of preserves and local honey are ready to enjoy throughout the winter. With the return of pumpkin spice treats, apple cider, and seasonal spiced baking, late summer and fall at Horton is a time for connection and celebration. Eating seasonally is one of the simplest ways to honour the land and those who work it - it reminds us to be present and to cook with what the earth is offering now. When you support local farms during the harvest season, you’re not only getting the freshest flavours, you’re also contributing to a more sustainable food system. Every purchase helps reduce food transport emissions and supports small farms as they face challenges like climate change and rising costs. There is so much you can do to savour the season: batch-cook soups and stews with market produce, preserve your favourite tomatoes, peppers, and apples for the months ahead, decorate your porch with local pumpkins, corn stalks, and mums, and take time to show gratitude for the abundance we enjoy here in St. Thomas and Elgin County. At the Horton Farmers' Market, seasonal kids' activities, cozy live music, warm drinks, overflowing produce tables, local meats and dairy, and fall flower arrangements await you at each Saturday market. As you stroll through the vendor stalls - with a warm drink in hand - for ingredients for back-to-school lunches, family dinners, and more, remember to put Horton on your autumn activity list. For many, fall brings back memories of community fairs and celebrations, family gatherings, and grandparents canning in the kitchen - times when life slows down and the years labours are celebrated and preserved for the coming winter season. Where food and memory are shared side by side, Horton is where these stories live on, and where local farmers' year-long hard work is celebrated and appreciated. Autumn is a feeling as much as it is a season. It is the scent of cinnamon, the crunch of leaves, and the sense of community found at every vendor stall, in every story, and through every shared smile.
Grab your scarf, fish out your flannels, bring your market bags or baskets, and we will see you at the Horton Farmers' Market.
